Fat Head Is On YouTube

Here's a great comedy documentary which mixes science, diet and libertarian thought. Tom Naughton produced this jewel a couple of years back and it led me to research much of what's been learned in the world of nutrition, and to be on the look out for propaganda in the way of so called research funded by big pharma and big ag.

Why Cut Carbohydrates

There's been quite a bit in the U.S. written on why and how we get fat. Just go to any bookstore and there will be a whole section on diets, usually found nearby, but separated from the cookbook section. Below is a chart that I think is helpful in explaining the how and why our bodies get fat. Click this link if the chart is too small for you to read as I wasn't able to make this one any larger.

If you know someone who blames their weight gain on a hormone imbalance and you've been inclined to doubt them, then doubt no more. We don't often think of insulin as a hormone, but that is exactly what it is, and it turns out that it is the key to most weight gain.

Update:  Having trouble with the image.  Will keep working at it, but in the meantime, check out the link.

Lunch, Anyone?

Here is fun food art over at Funky Lunch.

The pig reminds me of a poor man's Boar's Head, appropriately made with ham, but I think I'd rather eat Nessie.

Dying Easter Eggs, Naturally

Here's a video tutorial on how to use natural materials to dye Easter eggs. I've done this before, and I don't know if it is a matter of the video quality, but my eggs had much more vibrant colors, especially the blue from the red cabbage. Mine were a beautiful bright blue. At the end the host makes a "crack" about happy dying. It is more apropos for Holy week than I think he realizes. Pax.

I now understand

why we became a nation that eats junk food. It is because of the culinary delights of the 1970's. Oh, my. Just check out these Weight Watchers recipe cards and you will no longer have any doubt as to why families ate their meals at McDonalds, Burger King and A&W. The cards are extreme, but go to a used book store and find a cookbook from the seventies. While there may be a few gems, most make you scratch your head or just laugh out loud. Probably the greatest culinary achievement to come out of that decade was Chex mix, and even that is a little weird. Anybody remember Koogle, or Pepsi's "The Boss", a gallon bottle of soda, not Springsteen.
